N.H., Elephants Head, Crawford Notch. Back: The Gateway to the Crawford Notch. Elphant's Head guards the upper gateway to the Crawford Notch and close by is the idyllic little plateau which holds the Crawford House. Set within surrounding mountain walls, and just at the door of the famous hosteltry, lies a dainty gem of a lake, which is the true source of the Saco River. At Elephant's Head, the notch narrows, allowing scarce room for the railroad, the carriage road and the infant Saco to enter side by side the stupendous notch. 189. The Hugh C. Washington Club, organized to popularize travel to the summit of this mountain, which is the loftiest peak east of the Rockies and north of the Carolinas, being 6,293 ft. high. The view line from the top sweeps around a circle of nearly 1,000 miles. It is ascended by the World's First Cog Railway which has never had a fatal accident. The only other fatal accident happened after this postcard was sent on Sept. 17, 1967 where 8 passengers were killed.
