The scene constantly changes. While one looks the colors turn from one shade to another and then change color. It is hardly imaginable that the opposite Canyon wall is 13 miles away. The mind is unused to grasping such tremendous things. At first one is not impressed by this, yet slowly but surely incredulity is changed to possibility, and doubt is changed to belief. 1 cent stamp Address: Mrs. J. H. Baker

Half-Dome looms majestically on the right, a striking example of the glacial action of the prehistoric Ice Age. Merced Camera Exchange, Merced, Cal. "Plastichrome" by Colourpicture, Boston 15, Mass., U.S.A. In the postcard, the writer refers to fighting a fire. There were fires in Yosemite in September 1953 from a dry lightening storm that occurred. According to a self-guiding tour of Yosemite. Fire: https://www.yosemite.ca.us/library/auto_tour/wawona.html The Madera Tribune, Volume 62, Number 148, 19 September 1953 states: "A major timber fire roared out of control for the fourth day In a rugged canyon across from Hetch Hetchy dam in Yosemite National Park. Park Superintendent John Preston said the blaze, touched off by a lightning storm, has swept through nearly 100 acres along the steep slopes of the canyon. Preston said only the east side of the blaze was uncontrolled. Approximately 275 fire fighters and several bulldozers have been called into action." https://cdnc.ucr.edu/?a=d&d=MT19530919.2.13&e=-------en--20--1--txt-txIN-------- |
AboutAfter purchasing a large lot of postcards I became fascinated! The idea that these messages are from over 100 years ago is amazing and I wanted a way to preserve and share them. Archives
